Turkey to join Kyoto protocol

Turkish Parliamentary EU Adjustment Commission has adopted a bill to ratify Kyoto Protocol, the UN-led global climate pact on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The bill was submitted to the Turkish parliament on June 5th. It was adopted by the Parliamentary Environment Commission on June 11th.

The bill will come into effect after being ratified by the full house of the parliament.

The Kyoto Protocol is a document referring to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change with the objective of reducing greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

It was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on December 11th, 1997, and went into force on February 16th, 2005. As of June 2008, 182 countries have ratified the protocol.
