BEING A TURK SAVED US

Armed terrorists came to ten separate locations including luxurious Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels in Mumbai, the financial hub of India, by boats around 10 p.m. the previous night. The other places the terrorists raided were a cafe, hospital, Jewish center and train station. Terrorists took up position with their hostages and had clashes with Indian forces from time to time.

Turkish couple Seyfi-Meltem Muezzinoglu were staying at the Oberoi hotel. A good news came about the couple on Thursday morning. However, 28-year-old Turkish lawyer Yasemin Erden was rescued in the evening. Erden hid herself in the bathroom of her room for hours by eating chocolate.

Turks who got out of horrifying attacks of the al-Qaida in India said, "they looked at our passports and told us that they did not have any problems with Turks. They separated us from the people with U.S. and British passports."


PKK ON HIGHWAYS: TWO POLICE OFFICERS DEAD

PKK terrorists who got to downtown in the southern Hatay province from Amanos Mountains opened fire on a police team that was making routine controls on Adana-Iskenderun highway. 37-year-old police officer Ibrahim Darici died when terrorists opened fire from their car on them after the police team ordered them to stop. Four people, including a baby, were wounded. A special forces team was sent to the scene of the attack and clashed with terrorists during the chase. 38-year-old Halil Aksak was killed in that clash.

PKK ATTACKS POLICE: 2 DEAD


PKK Terrorists who attacked the traffic police at the highway entrance in the Iskenderun town of Hatay, killed police officer Ibrahim Darici. In the skirmish that erupted as the terrorists tried to flee the scene, another police officer was killed and another was wounded.


ERDOGAN WIDENS MEDIA BAN

Prime Ministry spokesman Akif Beki who did not renew the accreditation of seven reporters who followed Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prevented Milliyet's correspondent Abdullah Karakus and Vatan's correspondent Veli Toprak from covering an event organized by Justice and Development (AK) Party Women's Branches in Ankara.

SUPPORT TO CONSUMERS


After preparing a package of measures against global economic crisis, the government has launched other initiatives to revive the markets. One of the initiatives by the government is that Treasury Undersecretariat would pay 30 up to 50 percent of consumer credit interest rates for a year.


TWO POLICE OFFICERS MARTYRED IN HATAY

Two police officers were killed by terrorists at TEM highway in Iskenderun town of southern province of Hatay. Ibrahim Darici and Halil Aksak died when terrorists opened fire at a police car.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN CANNOT BE JUSTIFIED


Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke at Women's Congress on Thursday. "Oppressive and conservative attitudes based on gender discrimination that imprisons a woman to isolated life, excludes her from public areas cannot be considered a civil stance," he said. Erdogan also said, "no customs, no traditions and no understanding can justify violence by one person against the other. Especially a women's being subject to violence is graver."


FEAST OF SACRIFICE HOLIDAY TO BE NINE DAYS

Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that December 12, a day following the four-day Feast of Sacrifice, would probably be declared as holiday. Thus, the Feast of Sacrifice holiday will begin on December 6 and end on December 14.

ELECTIONS ALREADY FLAWED

Republican People's Party (CHP) group chairman claimed that voters from provinces of Kutahya, Konya and Afyon were registered in Izmir, while voters from other districts in Ankara were registered to Cankaya and said a shadow was already cast on the credibility of the elections. Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) said Higher Board of Elections (YSK) failed to account for the abnormal rise in number of registered voters.

Erol Tuncer, chairman of Social Economic and Political Researches Foundation, said such a rise in number of voters was impossible. "If these figures are correct then the figures in 2007 were wrong," said Tuncer. Researcher Erhan Erdem said it was wrong for YSK to directly use data obtained from the address based registry system.


LAWSUIT AGAINST ERGENEKON PROSECUTORS BEGINS

The lawsuit filed by the Chief Editor and concessionaire of our newspaper Ilhan Selcuk on the grounds that his personal rights were violated, has started. The objections of Ergenekon prosecutors were rejected. The petition for the lawsuit says: the Ergenekon prosecutors included irrelevant information and assessments about Selcuk in the indictment and therefore they violated the law.

METALIST DEFEATS GALATASARAY

Ukraine's Metalist Kharkiv soccer team defeated Galatasaray soccer team of Turkey 1-0 in the second round Group B match in UEFA Cup in Istanbul. Galatasaray will face Hertha Berlin of Germany in an away match on December 3.


TALKS WITH IMF

State Minister Mehmet Simsek said that technical talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) still continued, but it was not clear when talks would be completed. Turkish authorities and IMF had been working on a new program, Simsek said.

TAXES DECLINING


The new economic package is bringing credit support to consumers as well as tax facilities to companies. The details of the economic package being prepared by economic team of the government have started to get clear. Companies that merge will be exempt from Corporation Tax for one or two years to prevent possible company bankrupts due to the crisis. Also the sale of assets of the companies will be tax exempt.

The package also includes steps that will revive economy. The Treasury will meet 30 or 50 percent of interest payments of consumer credits for real estates, cars and durable house goods on condition that people buy domestic products. The Eximbank and Turkish Development Bank will increase support to small and medium scale enterprises.


METALIST DEFEATS GALATASARAY: 1-0

Galatasaray soccer team of Turkey played a home UEFA Cup group match with Metalist Kharkiv of Ukraine at Istanbul's Ali Sami Yen stadium. There were no goals in the first 80 minutes of the match. Metalist Kharkiv scored a goal due to a defensive mistake and won three points at the end of the match.

TWO POLICEMEN KILLED IN HATAY


A clash erupted between PKK terrorists and security forces in Iskenderun town of the southern province of Hatay. Two police officers were killed and four people including one policeman were injured in the clash.


WAGES TO BE PAID BEFORE FEAST OF SACRIFICE

The government gave employees good news ahead of the Feast of Sacrifice. Wages of civil servants and workers will be paid at the beginning of the month. The Feast of Sacrifice holiday will be nine days. It will begin on December 6 and end December 14.

Lions who lost the match out to Ukrainian team with one goal, jeopardised their chances of advancing to the next round. Galatasaray, who won their first two matches in the group were overrun by M.Kharkiv on the field. M.Kharkiv's goal came from Edmar who took advantage of Servet's defensive mistake.
