Trade volume on rise in free zones
Trade volume in free zones in Turkey increased 14 percent to 11.1 billion USD in the first five months of 2008 when compared to the same period of 2007.

According to figures of Foreign Trade Undersecretariat, Istanbul Leather Free Zone exported 2.5 billion USD of products, while Aegean Free Zone exported 1.7 billion USD and Istanbul-AHL 1.3 billion USD in the first five months of 2007.
Most trade through free zones in the first five months of 2008 was made to OECD and EU countries with 4.1 billion USD.
Free zones take place within the borders of a country but are exempted from regulations on customs, taxes, foreign currency, price, quality and standards.
