The Canakkale 18 Mart University academician from the Fine Arts Department, Enver Yolcu said the aesthetic codes of the Suleymaniye Mosque are discovered.

Yolcu had started his research considering the rate of measure between the minarets and the main body of the mosques in the Ottoman era.

Making use of the side façada rölöve of the Sulymaniye mosque prepared by Ali Saim Ulgen, after the analysis he transfered the rölöve into the computer base, he determined that the Architect Sinan used a “golden rate” in the vertical building of the mosque.

As Yolcu expanded his studies he discovered a lot of findings.

The aesthetic structure in the mosque

Yolcu pointed out that the relation between the main body and the minarets of a mosque is the most important.

He also stressed the minarets have been built in the history considered the main body of the mosques carefully in the form of a unity and with the aesthetic concerns.

“Nowadays this concern is forgotten and and the architects think that the higher the minarets are the better it is to show the highness of Islam.” Yolcu says.

Sinan’s Ratio

In his research Yolcu wondered whether the Architect Sinan used the numerical codes. Pointing out that the Architect Sinan knew the euclid geometry very well and made use of his special “golden ratio” in his work, Yolcu said, “ The “golden ratio” found in nature, in the plants and human body is the equality of the short piece to the long piece and the long piece is in equal ratio to the addition of the each two pieces. The numerical value of this ratio is 0.618.”

By many experts it has been determined that in the plan of the base of the Suleymaniye mosque, the Architect Sinan had used the “golden ratio” but as he expanded the research Yolcu found that Sinan used a different ratio. There is a ratio of 0.83 between the height of the minarets and the main body.
