The 53-year-old experienced chest pains on Saturday morning while paddle-boarding in Hawaii where the actor has a second home.

Spokesman Stan Rosenfield said the star was "resting comfortably" at an undisclosed hospital.

Grammer played psychiatrist Dr Frasier Crane for 20 years on TV show Cheers and his own spin-off series, Frasier.

The actor was with his wife off the Kona coast of Hawaii's Big Island, when he experienced symptoms.

'Good health'

He was immediately taken to hospital, where "it was determined that he had a mild heart attack", Rosenfield said.

He declined to give further details of Grammer's condition or his medical treatment other than to say the actor had otherwise been in "good health" and would be released from hospital this week.

The actor's heart attack comes three weeks after he learned US television network Fox was cancelling his new sitcom, Back to You, in which he starred as a womanising TV news host.

The series lasted for only one season.

Grammer's role in Frasier made him, at the time, the highest-paid US TV actor and tied the record for the longest-running role portrayed by a single actor in a prime-time show.
