On September 17th, Eruygur was hospitalized after he fell down and hit his head at a high-security prison in the northwestern province of Kocaeli. Since then, he has been under treatment at the intensive care unit of Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine Hospital due to cerebral hemorrhage.
According to sources, the Public Prosecutor's Office that was dealing with "Operation Ergenekon" applied to the 9th High Criminal Court of Istanbul and demanded Eruygur's release due to his health conditions.
After assessing such demand, the court decided on Sunday that Eruygur shall be released.
On July 1st, 2008, retired Gen. Sener Eruygur, who is also the head of Kemalist Thought Association (ADD), was taken into custody in capital Ankara within the scope of "Operation Ergenekon." He was arrested and sent to prison on July 6th.
An alleged criminal network that came to be known as "Ergenekon" was revealed after police seized hand grenades, TNT explosives and fuses in a shanty house in Istanbul on June 12th, 2007. Several Turkish figures, including retired senior army officers, were detained and sent to prison within the scope of the investigation.
The indictment regarding "Operation Ergenekon" was filed at an Istanbul court, indicting 86 people on charges of attempting to overthrow Turkish government. The 2455-page indictment includes 86 suspects, most of whom are in prison.
An Istanbul court will hold the first hearing of the case on October 20th.
