A number of NGOs gathered under the umbrella of the Positive Living Association (PYD) and held a mass demonstration, unlike previous years celebrating World AIDS Day with art displays and dance and rhythm performances along İstiklal Street in Taksim.
PYD founding member Professor Ayşe Deniz Gökengin made a statement to the press before the group's march. She stated that in the 27 years that have passed since the world first encountered the HIV virus, AIDS has turned out to be a treatable disease. "AIDS patients now live their lives under better conditions thanks to new, easy-to-use drugs," she noted. Gökengin said taking these new developments into consideration, they are calling on the public and saying, "Do not be afraid of AIDS, but be informed." Stating that AIDS is a problem for all of society although it has been regarded as the disease of "the other," she added that AIDS is in fact curable with early diagnosis.
After Gökengin's statement, the group marched toward Taksim Square along with dance shows and musical performances; some groups also performed rhythmic music at Tünel Square.
Ministry of Health figures show that there are 3,170 people who are HIV-positive in Turkey, but it is estimated that the actual number is higher. During 2007, approximately 200 people were diagnosed with HIV, but in just the first half of 2008, it had spread to another 250 people, according to information collected by the PYD.
