European diplomats are European, I presume
Monday, 07 April 2008 12:47
When I read the news item in yesterday's Hürriyet about preparations of European Union diplomats in Ankara for EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's visit, I suddenly realized that the infamous "community pressure" peculiar to us is also at work for Europeans living with us. According to Hürriyet, the European diplomats in Ankara have decided to ask that Barroso remind the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leadership that the EU is not a plaything to remember only when they are under duress.

I have no idea who suggested this idea of reprimanding the party in power for not doing enough to achieve what Brussels has been demanding from Turkey. I am not even sure that the news item is true. Unless the EU diplomats are blind to where they live and under what circumstances the AK Party has become the prey of the undemocratic forces in the country, I would never expect them in their right mind to suggest such a thing.

The AK Party's closure is demanded by forces in Turkey that are the fiercest opponents of the EU. Whoever applauded the chief prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Appeals for his indictment and the Constitutional Court for agreeing to hear it, the real reason behind their approval of AK Party's closure is the EU, or rather the AK Party's insistence on making Turkey a member of the EU.

The people who would not like to see the AK Party alive, well and kicking are the same people who would like to see Turkey untying itself from its EU prospect. They are trying to stop the AK Party because they were unable to stop the AK Party's march towards making Turkey an EU member. Whatever happens in domestic politics in Turkey has something to do with the AK Party's close alliance with the EU.

I don't know who to thank, Hürriyet for its false news item or EU diplomats for their shortsightedness, but I know if Mr. Barroso opens his mouth to criticize Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for being unenthusiastic about Turkey's EU prospect, he would be making the gravest mistake of his life. The AK Party is the only political actor in Turkey which is aware of the EU's importance and is pursuing a sincere political line to achieve full membership.

Why I suspect the falsity of the news item in Hürriyet is really important.

Hürriyet is the flagship of the Doğan Group, Turkey's largest media conglomerate. It publishes several newspaper titles, more than 20 magazines and has three national television stations. The group has been doing everything to topple the AK Party from power since July 22, 2007, when the AK Party renewed its mandate after receiving almost half of all votes.

Hürriyet as a flagship of the group hoped to create a coalition government to be formed between the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), but it failed. People overwhelmingly decided to vote for the AK Party.

The group was against the AK Party's choice for president of the republic and tried to stop Abdullah Gül from getting elected to that position. Members of Parliament opted to select Gül as president of the Turkish Republic rather than a candidate picked by a media baron. So Hürriyet failed again.

When the AK Party got the assistance of the MHP to lift a headscarf ban, the group's newspapers fought furiously against the motion but failed yet again.

Hürriyet as a mass-circulation paper is against everything our masses demand. When Parliament lifted the headscarf ban by amending two articles of the Constitution, Hürriyet's headline claimed "411 hands for chaos." Of 545 total votes, 411 voted to lift the ban; Hürriyet did not like this.

When the chief prosecutor prepared a court case against the AK Party, the text of his indictment was full of newspaper clippings, and almost all news items first appeared in Hürriyet or its sister papers. When reminded that some of the news items in his indictment had already been refuted and corrected, the chief prosecutor replied unceremoniously, "The Constitutional Court can sort out and purge the false ones."

The false items, not surprisingly, appeared mostly in the group's media outlets.

People who are not happy that Turkey is becoming democratic by following the Copenhagen criteria designed by the EU for its own members always think of stopping this process -- but never attempt to do so out of fear that they would attract the public's reprimand by harming the EU prospect. They wish to do everything to stop Turkey's accession to the EU, but without accepting any responsibility for it.

Support for EU membership in Turkey, although in decline recently, is a national choice. Though it has never deviated from the EU prospect, I wish the AK Party had been eager to pursue the EU agenda more vigorously.

The AK Party has been in the line of fire in Turkey because some circles fear that a Turkey with the AK Party's EU agenda would turn into a full-fledged democracy, leading them to lose their undeserved weight in the political arena. European Union diplomats, according to Hürriyet, by forcing Mr. Barroso to reprimand the AK Party for being unenthusiastic about the EU prospect, would be helping out the EU's fierce opponents in Turkey.

The AK Party is on the verge of closure because of its adherence to the EU prospect, and European diplomats are giving the EU's unrepentant opponents in Turkey a pretext to be used against the AK Party for being not enthusiastic enough.

I hope European diplomats in Ankara do not lose their savvy and sanity by reading Turkish papers every day.
