Obama, who will be fighting John McCain in the race for the White House, had a 20 minute phone call with the former President, which was described by his spokesman as “terrific”.

The spokesman for the Illinois added that "He (Obama) has always believed that Bill Clinton is one of this nation's great leaders and most brilliant minds.”

In turn, Bill Clinton’s spokesman said: “President Clinton continues to be impressed by Senator Obama and the campaign he has run, and looks forward to campaigning for and with him in the months to come.”

Clinton was one of his wife’s most fervent backers during the Democratic nomination race, and was often seen to be critical of Obama.

He missed the recent rally in Unity, where Hillary joined Obama on stage and had previously only issued a short statement congratulating him on his nomination.
