At the beginning, the famous Eurovision song contest was indeed a song contest. The initial purpose was to protect European music markets against the omnipotent American music industry. It was launched in 1956 by the European Union's founding members because they wanted to encourage the development of a European-style popular music for the global demand for music. However, the actual situation is not quite in tune with this intention. It is no longer possible to claim that the Eurovision song contest represents "the" European identity for two particular reasons. First, a quick look at the profiles and numbers of the participating countries indicates "Eurasia-vision" would be a more suitable title for this contest. However, this enlarged list allows us to understand which countries are privileged by continental European countries. For example, why can Israel, Cyprus, Malta and the three Caucasian republics participate in this show while Morocco and Tunisia cannot? It appears that there is a link between music and geographical proximity as well as the general public understanding that the Mediterranean islands have always been part of Europe while the southern shores of the Mediterranean have not.
The second issue is about the songs' musical character and their "Eurovision" spirit. In recent years, winning songs were not too related to the European music as we know it. One can say that music is universal. That is true; nevertheless, the contest's objective is not to be universal, but "European."
For some time now Eurovision's voting process has repeatedly been criticized. Everyone suspects that the public jury vote not for the songs, but for the countries. That means people try to affirm their political preferences in the context of this show. For example, Turkey is always sure that it will be generously supported by "brother" countries like Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina and by countries with large Turkish communities such as Germany, Belgium and France. Turkey is also sure that even if the song Turkey submits is the best ever, Cyprus and Armenia will never vote in favor of it.
During voting, people are eager to support their neighbors more than other countries. With that in mind, the neighbor with the most imposing culture and coercive stance easily gets to the top of the scoreboard. This fact allows us to see a picture of current interstate relations and exposes these countries' social structures and making it easy to observe which countries have minority groups, diasporas or lobbies and of which origin. In this context, there are people who wonder whether Armenia could get votes from Turkey every year without the support of Turkey's Armenians.
Another interesting observation can be made about the efforts of rival diasporas in one country. It's interesting to note that these groups are not free from the influence of rivalries between their respective countries of origin. These people identify themselves with their ancestral countries' values rather than those of the country they live in. We can observe this fact through Russia's votes for both Armenia and Azerbaijan or through France's votes for both Turkey and Armenia and also in the voting behavior of northern European or Balkan countries.
Maybe there still remain fans who believe Eurovision is nothing but an ordinary song contest. The process until the final night is in fact a song contest, at least for the singers who get the opportunity to publicize their names and their perform in front of a very large audience. But it seems the real contest is between the minorities residing in various countries.
